Where We Give
One of the Treasures of Mattie B's is the joy of giving. There are two primary Mattie B's foci in giving: the plight of women and improving and aiding our own community.
The 2020 Oval Award given to Sheriff Dan Smith
We have given to SowHope since we began in 2013. In actuality, a portion of each purchase contributes to SowHope and always has.
What is the purpose of SowHope?
“To inspire women around the world by promoting wellness, education, and economic opportunities.” This is what SowHope strives to accomplish through its programs around the world. Members of SowHope travel internationally to help women living in poverty in the hopes that their lives will be changed for the better. A few of the many projects include: 2017, SowHope partnered with a non-profit organization in Thailand to provide job training to women. In 2018, SowHope funded a project in Jordan to teach women in poverty to sew. In 2019, a cataract camp in South Sudan funded by SowHope restored hundreds of women’s eyesight. These are just a few of the projects that SowHope has helped to fund. In its 2018 annual report, it lists that “[s]ince SowHope began [in January of 2006], 198 projects have been funded in 20 countries, impacting 92,113 women.” To help its cause, Mattie B’s donates a portion of every sale to SowHope. By shopping at Mattie B’s, you are not only supporting local business, but SowHope and the women it helps around the globe as well.
On the Local Front:
Through the years Mattie B's has given to many local organizations. The 2019 list is below, however in 2018, on our five-year anniversary, we began a new way to give back. We introduced The Oval Award.
The oval represents many things:
it embraces connection and community
it represents unity and commitment
it has a sense of integrity and perfection
it is graceful and complete
Anna Clark Lester could be described as the “Mary Poppins of Stuart” because of her optimistic outlook and benevolent entrepreneurship. Her problem-solving prowess and friendliness brings unity to our community. She is a magnet that attracts both people and forward movement.
Our 2019 winner was Dr. Richard C. Cole. His commitment to Stuart was once again made evident when the town of Stuart lost its hospital by extending the hours of his offices. In addition, Dr. Cole created a space for Lab Corps locally and at personal expense has provided a CT machine and Urgent Care facilities. Dr. Cole exemplifies the Hippocratic Oath through doing no harm even at a personal cost.
Mattie B's contributed $1000 in his honor to the Stuart Rotary Club for the express purpose of developing walking trails at Rotary Field for walkers & runners.
These recipients have shown compassion and provided help to the community when it needed them the most and have continued to support it even when their actions may not have been recognized by many.
We are excited to continue to watch for the many gamechangers who affect and improve the community!
